A 23-year record high employment rate was recorded in April-June this year combined with a ten-year jobless low. The three-month rolling jobless rate was 6.9% in April-June, down from 7.1% in March-May, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) said. The April- June jobless rate was down from 8.1% in the same period a year earlier. The number of unemployed averaged 310,400 in April-June.

GKI-Erste’s combined gauge of consumer and business confidence edged down in May as business confidence declined, but consumer confidence improved slightly. The index slipped to minus 3.1 points in May from minus 2.9 points in April. The business index dropped to 3.7 points from 4.9, but the consumer index rose to minus 22.6 points from minus 25.0.

A record number of Hungarians expressed xenophobia or adverse attitudes towards foreigners according to the latest results of pollster Tárki’s annual survey. Fully 46% of respondents agreed with the statement that no asylum-seeker should be allowed to enter Hungary at all, the survey, taken since 1992, said.

Ákos Huszár, one of the study’s editors, said data revealed that the share of highprestige professionals, top executives and middle management in the whole population had risen while so had the share of unskilled workers and those at the brim of society.
