On May 25 Hungary will hold its election for the European Parliament. The government party opted to hold the national election on April 6 and a separate EP election seven weeks later. There was nothing that would have prevented the authorities from holding both elections on May 25, but such an arrangement wasn’t deemed advantageous to the governing party.

The Kúria, Hungary’s supreme court, on Thursday ruled that political parties are entitled to state financing in proportion with the number of votes cast for listed election candidates rather than the number of mandates won, as recently defined by the National Election Committee (NVB).

Exactly 19 of the 199 members of Hungary's new parliament are women. That comes to 9.5 percent, a ratio that speaks for itself. Looking for an adjective to describe the situation I thought of ridiculous, untenable and infuriating but finally settled for humiliating as the word that best describes what I feel when thinking of this 9.5 percent ratio.

Hungary’s 199 lawmakers took their oaths on Tuesday at the start of the new parliamentary cycle. Ruling party Fidesz has 117 deputies, its Christian Democrat ally 16 lawmakers, the opposition Socialists 29, radical nationalist Jobbik 23 and green LMP 5 deputies.
