Nearly 80 percent of Hungary’s mayors have joined a signature drive against the European Union’s migrant quotas, Károly Szita, the head of Hungary’s Association of County Seats, told a press conference on Wednesday. Szita said that 2,460 mayors had signed the letter to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, aimed at getting him to withdraw mandatory quotas.

Hungary’s grey economy has been shrinking over the past 13 years to total about 6.5-7 billion forints (EUR 21-22m) last year, Sámuel Ágoston Mráz, chief executive of the Nézőpont Institute, said, citing fresh data. In 2003 the size of the grey economy was estimated at 25% of gross domestic product (GDP) and this fell to 23.3% in 2010 and 21.9% in 2015, he said.

Budapest and Warsaw are in agreement that central Europe can become the engine of European growth, Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s minister of foreign affairs and trade, said after meeting his Polish counterpart Witold Waszczykowski. He said they had both agreed that Visegrad Group cooperation should be intensified, given changes taking place around the world, such as in US foreign policy and Brexit.
