Addressing the LIBE hearing, representatives of Hungarian rights groups criticised Hungary’s government for restricting fundamental rights. Márta Pardavi, co-chair of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, told LIBE that the government had systematically weakened its system of checks and balances, putting the fundamental values of the EU at risk.

To mark the start of the Shakespeare season, the Hungarian State Opera will host Shakespeare400+ festival in honour the esteemed playwright. This year, 17 adaptations will be presented in four different venues (the Opera House, Erkel Theatre, Music Academy and Müpa), including popular plays like Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The ruling Fidesz party labelled the resolution as a “second Tavares report”, but welcomed support from the European People’s Party. “The second Tavares report was passed only with the liberals, the left, the greens and the communists all joining forces,” Fidesz lawmaker Gergely Gulyás said, adding that his party has a clear antiimmigration stance.

The E-PM electoral alliance has called on opposition parties to attend a demonstration against expansion of the Paks nuclear plant on February 2, leader of the alliance Gordon Bajnai said on Tuesday. The demonstration will be aimed at calling a referendum on the recent agreement Hungary signed with Russia on the expansion.
