Cellar Village (Pincefalu), Hajos
- 14 Jul 2010 1:00 AM
"This is the largest continuous cellar district in Europe. Approximately 2 kilometres from the settlement is the best-known and most visited site in and around Hajós. Consisting of at least 1,200 wine cellars, this 'cellar town' is virtually a village in its own right built on top of the loess soil.
Cellars between 20 and 50 metres long were hewn out of the loess wall ensuring a suitable and virtually constant temperature in summer and winter alike for the wines stored there. In most cases these cellar 'holes' are vaulted and lined with brick. The wine press houses were usually built on top of the entrance.
May be visited at any time.
