Ferihegy airport operator Budapest Airport (BA) had been working on the agreement with the US airline for more than two years.

Tickets for Budapest-New York flights can be purchased from next week, BA communication director Mihály Hardy said.

American Airlines, which is also a member of the Oneworld Alliance sees Budapest as a gateway to other parts of Europe.

Delta is currently the only airline to have daily direct flights to New York. Its passenger loads topped 90% over the summer, Hardy pointed out."
