Invitation: 'Muses On Theatre Square', Budapest History Museum Until 2 September
"The Pest German Theatre opened on what is now Vörösmarty Square on 9 February 1812, with two plays by Kotzebue, for which the music was composed by Beethoven. The idea for the establishment of the theatre arose during the reign of Josef II, as Pest was gaining in importance and the growing bourgeoisie had an increasing demand for culture.

The largest theatre in Central Europe at the time, the building was designed by Austrian architect Johann Aman, and built with the supervision of Mihály Pollack. With a seating capacity of 3500, it was best suited for musical productions and operas, though it did present prose drama – in German. Many Hungarian artists appeared on its stage, Ferenc Erkel was one of its conductors. The building burned down in 1847, and the company moved to Erzsébet Square, where they worked between 1853–1869.

The anniversary is celebrated by a joint exhibition of the Budapest History Museum (BHM) and the National Széchényi Library. It opens during the time of the Budapest Spring Festival, on March 20, in the Castle Museum of BHM.

The exhibit is realized with support from the Embassy of Germany, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the signing of The Agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Hungary on Friendly Cooperation and Partnership in Europe.
