Ethnic Hungarians Down In Slovakia
Ethnic Hungarians live in majority in only two sub-county units in Slovakia, in Dunajska Streda and in Komarno, census data revealed. The proportion of ethnic Hungarians is on the wane in all southern sub-county units except Dunajska Streda where ethnic Hungarians make up 75% of the population and Komarno where Hungarians make up nearly 64%.

In Bratislava over 14,000 have self-reported as ethnic Hungarians and in Kosice, the second largest town, the number is 6,382. Slovakia’s population is 5,400,000 of which ethnic Hungarians total 458,000 or 8.5% of the population.

In ten years the number of ethnic Hungarians has dropped by 62,000. In 2001 ethnic Hungarians accounted for 9.7% of the population.
