Updated: Severe Heat Wave Alert In Hungary
Hungary's meteorological services have issued a red heat alert, the highest, for most parts of the country. A warning has been given for daily mean temperatures rising above 27 degrees Celsius on three consecutive days in 14 out of 19 counties and Budapest, meteorologist Tamas Feher said. The hottest weather is expected around Lake Balaton and the southern parts. Peaks of 38 degrees are expected on Thursday and Friday. According to some forecasts the heat wave could last until next Monday, 27 August.

In five northeastern counties, daily mean temperatures will remain around 25 degrees C Wednesday till Sunday, so the second-highest orange alert has been issued for these parts, Feher said.

A slight cooling of a few degrees is expected at the beginning of next week Feher said, adding that further cooling with more substantial showers is only expected next week, but without full certainty.

National chief medical officer Judit Paller said that a heat alert of the highest degree would be put in place from Wednesday till Sunday, while a second-degree alert is in place since Monday midnight.
