Xpat Opinion: No / Low Sugar Confectionery Stores In Budapest
Diabetic or not, it doesn't mean that you have to refrain from eating sweets and other foods containing carbohydrates. Although EU standards now require that all confectionery should show details of the calorie and carbohydrate content, few places seem to be following this regulation in Budapest at the moment. In this article several diabetic friendly confectioners in the city are reviewed so that visitors with diabetic problems, or anyone concerned about sugar intake, can enjoy the sweet and creamy side of Budapest.

Cukormentes Cukrászda
True to its name, Cukormentes (sugar free) makes everything free of sugar or uses fructose as an alternative so diabetics, or those on a diet, can eat them without hesitation. All the necessary information is given, from energy to carbohydrate content, making it easier for diabetics to decide what they can choose. There are a wide variety of sweet pastries and cakes to choose from. The staff who work there are really nice and helpful, ready to answer any question if the information on the card is not enough. Although diabetic foods are usually expensive, the prices in Cukormentes are surprisingly low. You can get some very healthy and delicious cookies for around 3-400HUF, so drop by whenever you are in District XII!

Álomsüti
I would guess that every diabetic sometimes dreams about eating a cookie from time to time, How nice it would be to eat one without worrying about the after-effects! Álomsüti makes every diabetic’s dream come true and amongst its 60 pastries and cakes is the “álomsüti” or dream cookie. Just like Cukormentes, this establishment is also dedicated to diabetics and people suffering from different kinds of food allergy and all of their products are prepared using fructose. As well as informing you about the calorie and carbohydrate count, the friendly staff at Alomsüti will also tell you if the cake has been baked with or without eggs, milk or gluten. Again, you can buy cakes for around 3-400HUF. When you are next in Szél Kalman square, make sure you visit this innovative and aspiring little confectioners shop!
Address: Fény utca 2, II. District, Budapest

Szamos
Not far from Budapest-Déli Railway Terminal there is a grand and classy confectionery shop called Szamos. Established in 1935, it has remained a favorite spot for those who have a sweet tooth ever since. Szamos has just recently expanded its already extensive list of delicacies to include diabetic sweets and cakes. Sugar is substituted with birch sugar or stevia. As is the case with previous confectioners, Szamos also provides detailed information on calorie and carbohydrate counts. The premises is much larger than the previous two establishments and can cater for around 20 people. The decorations and furniture resembles the style of the 1940’s, perhaps paying homage to the time of its origins. Pricewise, Szamos competes with other similar confectioneries, selling pastries within the same 400HUF range.
Address: Böszörményi Way 44-46, XII. District, Budapest

Sütipatika
The “cookie apothecary” opened in 2009 and is not far from Budapest-Nyugati Railway Station. It offers delicacies which also cater to the needs of diabetics. The interior decor of Sütipatika is modern and although there are only 5 tables inside, there are further tables outside to sit down and enjoy a slice of cake and some coffee in the sun. Although there are only 5 diabetic cakes on offer at the moment and the fact that they are 100HUF more expensive than their normal counterparts, priced between 4-500HUF, Sütipatika is still worth a visit if you are in the area.
