Annual Crime Rate in Hungary Down 60% Since 2010
Whereas in 2010 the authorities registered 447,000 crimes, today this figure is down by almost 60 percent, at 178,000, an interior ministry official said.

The government has tripled the budget of law enforcement in recent years, parliamentary state secretary Bence Retvari said at an event marking national crime prevention day in Kiskunfelegyhaza, in southern Hungary, adding that the police force has added 2,000-3,000 officers.

He highlighted a recent scheme launched by the National Crime Prevention Council (NBT) aimed at protecting young people from becoming victims of crime or criminals themselves.

As regards the government’s "manhunt" against drug dealers, Retvari said some 3,500 police officers have taken part in over 1,000 raids in recent weeks, seizing hundreds of kilogrammes of drugs.

He noted that a fresh amendment to the constitution outlaws not just the production and distribution but also the promotion of drugs, warning that young people who become addicts "lose not just their youth but also their adulthood".
