Next Protest in Budapest Planned for May 1st Against Amendment to Assembly Law
Demonstrators demanding the withdrawal of a recent amendment to the law on the right of assembly blocked Liberty Bridge in Budapest on Tuesday evening.

Independent lawmaker Akos Hadhazy had invited a demonstration concerning the issue for the sixth time but police refused to allow it for Tuesday, and the decision was approved by the supreme court Kuria.

The protesters first gathered at Ferenciek Square near Elisabeth Bridge around 5pm and an hour later a few hundred people led by opposition Momentum leaders and activists moved to Liberty Bridge and blocked it.

Police instructed them to leave the roads and move to the sidewalk but they sat down instead. Police then started checking protesters' IDs and pushed them to the sidewalk, so traffic resumed on the bridge around 7.30pm.

Hadhazy stayed at Ferenciek Square and walked to Elisabeth Bridge from where he posted a Facebook video stating that the protest originally planned to be held on Elisabeth Bridge was banned for political reasons.

He said the series of protests would continue on May 1 and added that it was important that many people should attend the "peaceful but resolute" protest.

He added that the police had not licenced the planned May 1 protest either, which he said created a new situation. Hadhazy said he would launch an online vote on Wednesday to ask "what should be done at the next occasion". He added however, that to stop the series of protests would not be among the options.

Police said on its website before 7.30pm that Liberty Bridge had been reopened to traffic.
