Budapest Spring Festival Founder Dies
Imre Kiss, the founding head of the Palace of Arts, and the man responsible for creating the Budapest Spring Festival in 1981, died on Sunday at the age of 69 following a lengthy illness, the Palace of Arts announced. As founding director of the Spring Festival, Kiss reconnected Budapest to the cultural circulation of Europe and the world, and opened avenues for Hungarian and foreign artists.

Kiss was asked to run the Palace of Arts cultural complex when it opened in 2003, which he lifted into the international front-line with unprecedented speed.

He asked to be relieved of that post due to ill health in March, 2011, but remained involved as a senior adviser.

Kiss has received several Hungarian and international awards for his work.
