Invitation: Harmonia Jazz Workshop, Budapest Jazz Club, 15 February
- 13 Feb 2013 8:00 AM
Pianist Kalman Olah won the Thelonious Monk Jazz Composers’ Competition in Los Angeles. He is – without a doubt –one of the most original pianists on the Hungarian jazz scene. He is also one of the very few who have captured the spirit of Bela Bartok in jazz.
However, he has never turned his back on bebop which he plays with his most long-standing formation, this brilliant group, Trio Midnight which is, incidentally, Lee Konitz’ chosen Hungarian backing group. The bassist Janos Egri is one of the grand masters of his instrument in this country. He is also a formidable bass guitar player and leads several bold experimental groups of his own. Elemer Balazs is, arguably, the best drummer in his country.
As for him, it’s best to quote what the American guitar ace, Pat Metheny said of him: "Elemer is one of the best drummers around right now, in my opinion. He plays with such musicality and finesse and has the ability to listen inside each musical moment with the kind of spontaneous decision making that allows everyone that plays with him to sound their best. He also has a wonderful touch on the instrument - I always enjoy the chance to play with him and to hear him."
Entry fee: 1400 forints
