Socialists Campaign To Cut VAT On Food In Hungary
- 21 Mar 2013 7:30 AM
The Socialists will start a petition drive to have the VAT on basic foodstuffs lowered from 27% to 5%, party president Attila Mesterházy told reporters last Wednesday. Speaking after a meeting of the party executive, he said the drive is necessary because Fidesz did not support the Socialist proposal in Parliament.
In response, Fidesz MP Szilárd Németh said the Socialist move lacks credibility because the party made contrary decisions when it was in power. He recalled that Mesterházy had voted for two VAT increases.
