A Taste Of China: A Review Of The 'Great Chinese Restaurant' In Budapest
The Great Chinese Restaurant (Nagy Kinai Étterem) is one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in Budapest. Opened in 1992 and renewed in 1997, it prides itself on being a typical Chinese restaurant, using a reddish-brownish color as the base, red lanterns providing decorative elements and traditional Chinese music, which culminate to give a truly East-Asian atmosphere.

As soon as one enters, they will find the menus laid out to the right, designating the varieties of hotpot dinners. The menus are in Chinese; however, each option has an illustration depicting the food, thus diminishing chances of miscommunication. When in doubt, there are pictures of recommended dishes placed on the wall, highlighting the restaurant’s specialties.

The restaurant caters to groups of all sizes; whether one comes alone or with a larger party, people can enjoy their meals in a comfortable and adapting environment. There are public as well as private places; for example, at the end of the corridor, past the kitchen, a staircase takes guests down to the basement, where smaller rooms await. On the other hand, a large group can sit down at the entrance area, which has small (for 4-6 people) and large (10-12 people) tables, too.

Besides the hot pot, this restaurant also offers traditional Chinese dishes. Similar to the hot pot menu, the traditional menu also includes pictures with descriptions of each dish in Chinese, Hungarian and English.

Eating a formal meal at Nagy Kinai Etterem for two people is relatively reasonable, and will cost around 4000 HUF. Soups are around 400-700 HUF; other dishes are between 1000-3500 HUF accordingly.
