Hungary Wins Court Battle Against European Commission

On 31 May 2010, Hungary lodged an appeal with the Court of Justice of the European Union with respect to the European Commission's authorisation of the industrial cultivation of the genetically modified (GM) Amfora potato and the use of its by-products in animal feeds, asking that these Commission decrees be annulled.
In its ruling on 13 December 2013, the European Court of Justice annulled the Commission's decrees allowing genetically modified Amflora potatoes to enter the market. According to the ruling, the European Commission had seriously contravened the regulations on the procedures for the authorisation of GMOs, meaning that the European Commission did not act according to its procedural responsibilities.
The ruling is a reinforcement of the fact that Hungary is moving in the right direction and the battle against GMOs within the European Union must be fought with even greater commitment to preserve the GMO-free Hungarian agriculture set down in the country's Fundamental Law.
