US Senator Cardin Criticises Hungary
US Democrat Senator Ben Cardin expressed concerns about human rights in Hungary in the US Senate on Friday. Cardin, who as chairman of the US Helsinki Committee conducted a hearing on the issue in March, said the church law remains problematic because Parliament has an “unreviewable” power to decide what is or is not a recognised church.

As for the media, he said it is worrisome that the Media Council has threatened the ATV station with fines if it continues to describe Jobbik as “extremist”. This could protect Jobbik from criticism in the lead-up to the elections, Cardin added.

He also expressed concern about a new law that allows prison terms for defamation of character.
