A picture by Hungarian-born French artist Simon Hantaï (1922–2008) broke the auction record when it was sold for EUR 2 464 000 (about HUF 740 million) in Paris.
No such price has ever been paid at an art auction for the work of a contemporary artist of Hungarian birth. The record was set at a Sotheby’s auction on December 13, when Hantaï’s large-size painting, entitled M.A. 5 (Mariale), made in 1960, was offered for sale.
The work of art came to Sotheby’s Auction House from the estate of movie director and producer Claude Berri.
