Hungary’s Gov Measure Could Affect Water Meters, But Not Gas And Electricity Meters
A measure announced by the government on Wednesday to require service providers to pay for utilities meter replacement could affect water meters, but gas and electricity distributors already cover such costs for retail customers, industry insiders told MTI.

Szilárd Németh, a lawmaker of governing Fidesz in charge of reducing Hungarians’ bills, said after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday that service providers should cover the full cost of replacing utilities meters, starting “as soon as possible”.

A spokesman for electricity distributors Elmű and Emász told MTI that households do not pay for installing, replacing, certifying and maintaining meters at present. Norbert Boross said the companies could not comment on the government decision until the related decrees are published.

A spokesman for gas distributor Tigáz told MTI that gas meters are owned by distributors, thus they pay for their replacement and upkeep. Gábor Száraz said the ownership is established under rules that govern companies that sell gas to households at regulated prices.
