National Philharmonic’s Concert, National Concert Hall, Budapest, 13 Feb
- 12 Feb 2014 8:06 AM
The work is rarely heard in the original version to be played at this concert. Born in 1892, Swiss-French composer Arthur Honegger achieved his first success in 1921 with his dramatic psalm Le roi David, composed in just two months.
The oratorio, which follows the life of King David from his time as a shepherd boy, through his triumphant conquests, spiritual struggles, loves and bereavements all the way to his death, became familiar in a later revised version, and the original version is only very occasionally heard in concert halls.
