Alleged Election Forgery Must Be Examined, Says Hungary’s Unity
- 14 Mar 2014 8:00 AM
The government is legally obliged to examine suspicious signatures in connection with the campaign to field candidates in the April 6 election, politicians of the leftist Unity alliance said. Senior Socialist lawmaker József Tóbiás told a press conference that the interior ministry had the authority to examine complaints based on signature samples attached to data kept in a central database, in cooperation with the police.
If complaints are found true, not only election fraud will have been committed but also personal data of citizens abused, he said, citing the example of a member of the election committee in the town of Paks who found his data and signature on a form that he had never signed.
This obvious case of forgery had no consequence other than the exclusion of that particular signature from the count, Tóbiás said.
