Updated: Airbnb Ban Confirmed in Budapest Party District
Around 54pc of the residents of Budapest's District VI, in the city centre, have voted for a homestay ban in a two-week referendum ended Sunday, the local council told MTI.

Of the 6,083 votes cast, 3,265 backed the ban and 2,818 were against it, the council said. The 20.52pc participation rate was "well over" the rate for similar votes, it added.

As a result, the local council will ban short-term homestays from January 1, 2026.

MTI reports: District Council Approves Short-Term Rentals Ban After Referendum Result

The local council of Budapest's District VI, in the city centre, voted on a short-term rentals ban from January 1, 2026 at a meeting on Thursday.

In a statement, the local council said residents' "peace at home" had trumped the decline in budget revenue the ban would entail.

In a referendum in September, around 54pc of the residents of the district voted for the homestay ban. The 20.5pc participation rate was "well over" that for similar votes, such as the 9pc rate for a city-wide survey of residents, the local council noted.
