State of Emergency Prolonged by Lawmakers in Hungary
Parliament voted on Monday to empower the government to prolong by 180 days the state of emergency in connection with the war in Ukraine.

The motion passed with 130 votes in favour, while 49 MPs voted against changing the law on rules to be applied in case of war in a neighbouring country as well as in the case of humanitarian disasters.

According to the law, an extended state of emergency is needed to handle the humanitarian catastrophe caused by the war in Ukraine and to tackle the economic consequences.

MPs Debate Prolonging State of Emergency in Hungary

MPs on Tuesday are debating a proposal to extend the state of emergency in connection with the war in Ukraine.

The proposal is to prolong the measure by 180 days, from November 19 to May 18, 2025.

MPs will also debate the law amendment on preventing and managing the fallout of a war in a neighbouring country or a humanitarian disaster in Hungary.

They will also debate the amendment of the law on public trust foundations affecting universities as a matter of urgency, which the government says is in light of "the European Commission's discrimination against Hungarian students and lecturers".
