Hungary’s Culinary Scene Shines with New Michelin Recognitions
In December at an awards gala, the world’s most prestigious gastronomic guide will once again announce  which restaurants will be awarded the accolade as newcomers and which will retain their prestigious Michelin accolades.

Currently, 70 domestic culinary establishments across the country boast one of the globally recognized award categories, and 26 domestic hotels have now been listed as recommended by the prestigious guide. A printed publication covering the full range of domestic hospitality will be published early next year, reports Turizmus.com.

The first Michelin star in Hungary arrived in Budapest in 2010, and the first stand-alone Hungarian guide was published in 2022, putting the country’s culinary offer on the gastronomic map of the world.

Today, nine Michelin-starred restaurants mark the explosive development of creative, quality Hungarian gastronomic workshops. As an important milestone of the gastronomic revolution, the stars are also reaching beyond the capital, with one of the two Hungarian 2-star restaurants located in the countryside.

Restaurants with two Michelin stars:

Platán Gourmet, Tata (northern Hungary)
Stand, Budapest

Those who received one Michelin star:

Babel, Budapest
Borkonyha Winekitchen, Budapest
Costes, Budapest
essência, Budapest
Rumour, Budapest
Salt, Budapest

The authoritative gastronomic guide and the downloadable Michelin app are also drawing attention to a number of restaurants across the country that have received other Michelin accolades. Contrary to popular belief, the restaurants recommended in the guide are not just fine dining.

From luxury restaurants to trendy bistros and quality family restaurants offering local flavors, they offer a wide range of culinary experiences at a variety of price points.

For example, the recommended restaurants marked with the plate symbol can be found in 55 locations across the country, offering quality at affordable prices.

They can also choose from six local Bib Gourmand restaurants that represent excellent value for money. Furthermore, the Green Michelin star for ethical and environmentally friendly restaurants has so far been awarded to four local establishments.

This brings the total number of Michelin-awarded restaurants in the country to 70, which is now attracting attention from around the world.

“International research shows that quality gastronomy is one of the most important factors influencing travel. Michelin awards are therefore a major advantage in attracting gastronomic tourists. Travelers are increasingly looking for experiences. And one of the most important of these is excellent cuisine, which can entice guests to discover something new or even to return,” stressed Olivér Csendes, CEO of Visit Hungary.

Appearing online long after XpatLoop.com this ‘government related’ source states its aim as "to provide a complete, unbiased picture of Hungary”. It continues by acknowledging this “does not necessarily mean that our writers do not have their own opinions, sometimes reflected to a degree in the articles they publish” - and so it's really worth readers here keeping that in mind. Another stated aim is to become ‘the leading English-language news portal of Hungary’, a position held for well over 20 years by good old independent XpatLoop!
