“When saving energy, we are not only being easy on our wallet, but we are also protecting our environment,” says the WWF campaign.
According to environmentalists, by 2050 even two planets won’t be enough to meet human needs based on current consumer behaviour. That’s why the biggest non-governmental voluntary Earth Hour campaign is being organized again this year, which anyone can join by switching their lights off for an hour from 20:30 on 29 March.
The needs of humanity go well beyond the Earth’s carrying capacity people use more natural resources than the planet can provide. In Hungary, energy consumption is more than one-third of the country’s biocapacity, thus raising consumer awareness is essential, experts say.
This year in Singapore, stars of the movie The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be switching the lights off and throwing their support behind Earth Hour’s newly launched crowdsourcing platform – Earth Hour Blue – to support environmental projects.
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007 and by 2012 more than 7000 cities and towns in 152 countries had joined the action.
