Hungary’s Foreign Minister Martonyi Announces Retirement
János Martonyi has announced that he will retire from the government as foreign minister at the end of the current governing cycle. The minister made the announcement to news website origo.hu and commercial broadcaster InfoRadio at a conference on Tuesday.

“I am finishing my foreign service as the current government departs,” Martonyi, who has completed two four-year government cycles as foreign minister, told Origo.

The 70-year-old said that as a member of both governments of Viktor Orbán (1998-2002 and 2010- 2014), he had spent eight years in the post. He said he had spoken with the prime minister about this topic on several occasions.

It was not a secret that he did not wish to continue, he said, adding that rumours had gone about in the mid-cycle that in 2010 he had only agreed to take up the post for a period of two years.

Martonyi said it had been a great honour to head the foreign ministry for eight years.
