Hungary's Liberal Leader Says Fidesz’s Lead Can Be Overcome
The ruling Fidesz party can be defeated; its lead can be trounced, head of the non-parliamentary Liberal Party Gábor Fodor said in Tuesday’s daily Népszava.

Fodor, whose party forms part of the left-of-centre alliance, said in an interview that although public opinion polls show a significant Fidesz lead, the surveys were really “feeling around in the dark”. In addition to the high number of uncertain voters, a large part of the population refuses to answer public opinion polls or deliberately gives misleading answers, he added.

By-elections have repeatedly demonstrated that the polls were not right and in wards where the polls showed a strong Fidesz lead, the party only managed to win by a small margin if at all. The most important message of the upcoming election is the choice between East and West, Fodor said.

“Fidesz and the government want to fight a war of independence with Europe; in other words with its allies,” Fodor said. The ruling party is looking for allies in the East, for instance with Russia, “whose political value-system is well demonstrated by the occupation of Crimea,” he added.
