Strasbourg Court Rules Against Hungary In “Life Sentence” Case
- 21 May 2014 9:00 AM
The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has ruled against Hungary in a non-final decision published on Tuesday involving a case of life imprisonment without eligibility for parole. In the case of László Magyar, convicted for homicide and robbery, the court ruled that his life sentence with no parole eligibility and the conditions of his detention were degrading and therefore violated the European Convention on Human Rights.
The Strasbourg court has also stated that the length of the proceedings against Magyar, which lasted for eight years from 2002 to 2010, was excessive and failed to meet the “reasonable time” requirement.
