New Congress Centre In Budapest To Be Built In Four Years
Preparations have started in Budapest to build a new congress centre with a capacity of 4,000-5,000 people and the project is planned to be completed in four years, the government commissioner in charge of priority projects in Budapest said. Balázs Fürjes said that Budapest was lacking a modern congress centre that met 21st century requirements and a capacity of at least 4,000.

The project is now being prepared based on international experience, he added. He said it was important to get the new centre designed by Hungarian architects and have it built by Hungarian firms. Initially, an advisor will be selected through public procurement to find the best concept based on international examples, he said. The designer will also be selected through public procurement, he added.

The state bought a plot of nearly 13,000 square metres from the Trigranit group next to the Palace of Arts just south of the city centre in Pest in early 2014, he added. Talks have also started with tourism organisations and all steps will be taken after consultations with these organisations, he said. It is a realistic target to make Budapest one of the top five conference tourism destinations in the world and one of the top three in Europe, he added. Fürjes said the complex is expected to turn profitable in 10 years after completion.
