Hungarian Grandmaster Polgár Retires From Professional Chess
Hungary’s international chess grandmaster Judit Polgár has decided to retire from professional chess. Polgár, 38, who has topped the women’s world ranking list since 1989, made the announcement about her retirement in an interview in The Times magazine on Wednesday.

Polgár became at the age of 15 the youngest ever international grandmaster in the world, breaking Bobby Fischer’s record.

She formed with her older sisters Zsuzsa and Zsófia, as well as Ildikó Mádl, the Hungarian national team that triumphed in the chess Olympics twice, in 1988 and in 1990.

Polgár, the world’s top female chess player garnered her best score, 2,735 points, in July, 2005.

Polgár will from now on focus her attention on the activities of her foundation and on further promoting chess education in school.

She established the Judit Polgár Chess Foundation for Educational Benefits in 2012. In March 2013, Polgár was awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary Commander’s Cross with Star.
