Police Raid NGOs Offices In Budapest
A special police unit from the National Bureau of Investigation (NNI) searched the offices of the Ökotárs Foundation and another NGO on Monday morning, acting on suspicions of mismanagement of funds and illegal financial activities. Ökotárs is the co-ordinator of funds distributed to Hungarian NGOs under the Norway Grant scheme.

The NNI agents searched the homes of Ökotárs officials, including its leader Veronika Móra, after which she was questioned but not detained, her lawyer Erzsébet Kadlót said.

In addition, police raided the office of Demnet, a foundation for the development of democracy, a consortium partner of Ökotárs in the distribution of the Norwegian grants.

Police seized documents relating to NGOs the Democratic Youth Foundation, K-Monitor, Krétakör, Labrisz, NANE, the Roma Press Centre, Transparency International and the civil liberties union TASZ.

Hundreds turned out for an impromptu demonstration of support outside the Ökotárs office on Monday afternoon.
