“Racist Conference” Organiser Taken Into Custody In Budapest
Hungarian police took into custody one of the organisers of a “racist conference” that had been banned, the Immigration and Citizenship Office (BAH) said. The police detained Richard Bertrand Spencer, a citizen of the United States, on Friday after he could not produce documents permitting him to stay in Hungary.

He was then put in detention and transferred to immigration authority BÁH, which launched a procedure against him. Earlier in the week, at the prime minister’s request, the Interior Ministry banned the conference which was scheduled to take place between October 3 to 5.

Interior Minister Sándor Pintér also instructed the national police chief to ban the potential participants’ entry into Hungary. The minister established that the organisation professes an overtly racist ideology and speakers champion racist ideas.

The conference organiser, the Montana-based National Policy Institute, vowed this week to press ahead with the event.

On Friday, around hundred people protested against the conference in central Budapest.
