He noted that was a negotiator with the Council of Europe and the European Commission, helping to smooth out disputed issues, which were resolved and Hungary amended the law where necessary.

Navracsics pledged that he would not be influenced by party lines in seeking cooperation during his mission.

He said he believed in the basic principles enshrined in the EU’s treaty and vowed to be independent as a commissioner.

He was asked to give guarantees that he would represent citizen rights in a European sense and not by the widely-disputed Hungarian interpretation.

He said he was conscious of both his rights and responsibilities and would be a loyal and impartial commissioner.

He said this in response to a question regarding remarks by Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who suggested the new commissioner would represent Hungarian interests in Brussels.
