Centre for Budapest Transport (BKK) awarded German-based global solutions provider Scheidt & Bachmann a €91 mln five-year contract to design, supply and manage an automated multi-modal fare collection system, railwaygazette.com reported. Some €54.5 mln will be provided for the project by the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development and HUF 5.3 bln by the municipality of Budapest.

Scheidt & Bachmann and its Hong Kong-based subcontractor Octopus Transactions are scheduled to install a total of 10,000 validators on 2,500 vehicles, along with approximately 800 access gates at the subway stations of Budapest.

The plans involve the issuing of more than 1.5 million personal or anonymous smart cards. According to the plans, the first year would see the sales of nearly 9 million single-use paper tickets with a NFC interface. The system will accept online, mobile phone and PayPass bank card purchase options.

Scheidt & Bachmann said the ‘world class’ system for Budapest would be ‘on a par with those in cities such as London, Chicago and Hong Kong’. Scheidt & Bachmann has already supplied more than 200 ticket vending machines for the Budapest region under a separate contract.
