Slovakia to Temporarily Reinstate Border Checks Due to Foot-and-Mouth Disease
In response to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease affecting certain farm animals, Slovakia will temporarily reinstate border checks at its crossings with Hungary and Austria starting Tuesday. The decision was approved by the Slovak government at its meeting on Monday.
According to the Slovak public news agency TASR, the measure will be in effect for one month, until May 8.
The Ministry of the Interior, which submitted the proposal, explained that the move aims to help prevent the spread of the disease. It also allows authorities to restrict traffic at certain border sections if necessary—particularly at smaller, less-equipped crossings.
Just hours after the government’s announcement, the Slovak National Police Headquarters issued a statement (also shared with MTI), confirming that from April 8 to May 8, a total of 17 smaller border crossings will be temporarily closed to traffic—16 on the Slovak-Hungarian border and one on the Slovak-Austrian border.
The following Slovak-Hungarian border crossings will be closed:
-
Dunacsún (Cunovo) – Rajka
-
Dunaradvány (Radvan nad Dunajom) – Neszmély
-
Helemba (Chlaba) – Ipolydamásd
-
Szalka (Salka) – Letkés
-
Ipolyhídvég (Ipelské Predmostie) – Drégelypalánk
-
Ipolyvarbó (Vrbovka) – Őhalom
-
Rárospuszta (Trenc) – Rárós
-
Sajólénártfalva (Lenártovce) – Bánréve
-
Gömörhosszúszó (Dlhá Ves/Domica) – Aggtelek
-
Kenyhec (Kechnec) – Abaújvár
-
Abaújnádasd (Trstená pri Hornáde) – Kéked
-
Eszkáros (Smáros) – Hollóháza
-
Alsómihályi (Michalany) – Alsóregmec
-
Bodrogszerdahely (Streda nad Bodrogom) – Karos
-
Nagygéres (Velký Horeš) – Nagyrozvágy
-
Nagytárkány (Veľké Trakany) – Zemplénagárd
The one closed crossing on the Slovak-Austrian border will be:
-
Magyarfalu (Záhorská Ves) – Angern
The Slovak Ministry of the Interior also stated that during the temporary control period, the central crisis team, established in response to the outbreak, will assess each border crossing to determine whether to further restrict traffic—for example, temporarily banning motor vehicles from passing through certain points.
The aim is to direct vehicle traffic through crossings that have facilities for disinfection.
These restrictions do not affect pedestrian or bicycle traffic along unofficial border areas, commonly referred to as the “green border.”
