Hungary's Ruling Party Leader Rogán Presses Case For Drug Tests
A bill on drug tests for teenagers, journalists and politicians is expected to be drafted by late January, Fidesz caucus leader Antal Rogán told reporters on Wednesday. However, government spokesman Zoltán Kovács told reporters that the cabinet has no official position yet on the drug tests.

Rogán asserted that organised crime obtains most of its income from drug trafficking and that illegal drugs are the greatest danger to children.

Separately, health state secretary Gábor Zombor said “this plan is so exaggerated, and in my opinion will change in the future”.

A “well known” but anonymous Fidesz politician told Népszabadság that the mandatory drug test proposal for journalists and politicians is unconstitutional and also violates the European Convention on Human Rights. Moreover, MPs have immunity from prosecution, he noted.

Data protection chief Attila Péterfalvi told Magyar Nemzet that drug tests for politicians and journalists would not withstand legal scrutiny, while legislators should proceed meticulously as regards children lest they violate any constitutional right.
