Socialist Leaders Meet “Friends Of Hungary” In Brussels
Hungary has friends in Brussels and there is no indication that Hungary should be isolated or be at war with the European Union, Socialist chair József Tóbiás told a press conference in the European Parliament. Tóbiás, accompanied by Socialist board member Zita Gurmai and Vilmos Szabó, the party’s international secretary, met EP President Martin Schulz, as well as commissioners Corina Cretu and Johannes Hann.

Tóbiás added that he was scheduled to meet Hungarian commissioner Tibor Navracsics, too.

Tóbiás criticised the Hungarian government’s attitude which he suggested was working against national interests in Europe, and pledged efforts by the Socialists to ensure that Hungary becomes a beneficiary of changes in Europe rather than a country negatively impacted by them.

He also suggested that possible conflicts with the EU should be resolved through negotiations rather than through “isolation or conflict”.

Tóbiás said that he also held talks in preparation for a congress of the Party of European Socialists to be held in Budapest in June.

For this reason, his talks also focused on the situation of the European political left and key issues to be addressed in neighbourhood policy, the Eastern Partnership initiative and regional development.
