Stricter Rules Could Require Thousands Of Lift Renovations, Replacements In Hungary
A government decree amended last year could require thousands of lifts in Hungary to be replaced or renovated by 2020, daily Népszabadság said.

Lifts that were not built or have not undergone a complete renovation in the previous 20 years will be scrutinised for compliance with stricter safety regulations in 2020, the head of the Hungarian Lift Association told the paper.

Most of these older lifts will not pass muster, said Kornél Apatini. About one-third of the 37,000 lifts in Hungary were built before 1990.

Apatini put the cost of building a new lift at 5-10 million forints and the cost of a renovation at 20-25% that amount.
