Hungary Makes Broad Range Of Efforts To Fight Cancer
Hungary has tightened laws and launched programmes over the past years to combat cancer, State Secretary for Health Gábor Zombor said on Wednesday, World Cancer Day. Data by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) show that 27% of deaths were caused by cancer in 2013. For that year, KSH reported 126,800 deaths in Hungary.

Among Hungarian women aged under 60 lung cancer-related deaths went up considerably in 2012, whereas deaths caused by breast cancer and cervical cancer stagnated or dropped, data by the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer showed. In Hungary, about a third of 20,000 smoking-related deaths are linked to lung cancer per year.

The cause of 90% of lung cancer cases is smoking. Hungary has enacted stricter nonsmoking rules as a result of which the number of smokers has declined, Zombor said.

A campaign promoting vaccination for young women against cervical cancer has been launched.

A pilot programme ensuring cervical cancer screening by district nurses in several counties has also been launched. This year Hungary’s central budget has earmarked 5 billion forints (EUR 16m) for cancer prevention programmes.
