More Hungarians Moving Abroad
At least 31,500 Hungarian citizens left the country for more than a year in 2014, up by nearly 50% from 2013 and six and a half times of the figure recorded in 2009, business daily Világgazdaság said on Wednesday, citing figures from the Central Statistical Office (KSH).

The number of Hungarians leaving the country for the long term in 2013 was estimated at 21,580, using health insurance figures and other forms of registration.

This grew by 46% in 2014, the paper said. KSH statisticians said, however, that these estimates are likely to be well below the real figures since many neglect to tell the authorities they are leaving the country.

This has been confirmed by looking at migration data from other countries.

The KSH researchers said most Hungarians leaving for abroad are young, with 77% under the age of 40 and 44% under 30. Some 54% were men and nearly two-thirds were unmarried.

The most attractive destinations for Hungarians moving abroad were Germany, Britain and Austria, the paper said.
