Economist and central banker Alexandre Lamfalussy, born as Sándor Lámfalussy in Hungary, has died at the age of 86, his family said on Monday. A resident of Belgium, Lamfalussy was known as “the father of the euro” and for his financial service industry policies. He left his native Hungary in 1949.
From 1999, he was head of the economic advisory body of the first government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Lamfalussy was given the title of baron by the Belgian king in 1993, and in 1999 he was made a commander in France’s prestigious Legion of Honour.
The National Bank of Hungary established a prize in Lamfalussy’s honour in 2013.
