Afghan Embassy Budapest Closed Last Month
The Afghan embassy in Budapest closed on July 1 for reasons of economy, the Foreign Ministry confirmed on Tuesday. It said the embassy closed, presumably because the Afghan government is cutting its network of embassies for financial reasons. There are some 2,000 Afghans among the 5,000-6,000 asylum seekers staying in Hungary, according to the Helsinki Committee.

Migration Aid spokeswoman Zsuzsanna Zsohár said the Afghan state had abandoned its citizens with its decision.

She told HVG that Afghan asylum seekers had been able to go to the embassy when they needed documents or interpreters, and that the embassy issued birth and death certificates.

Zsohár said there is no other solution for migrants now than to contact the Afghan embassy in Vienna through the Immigration Office, as most of them have no cash to make phone calls and may not cross the border either.
