Együtt Refiles Report To Police On 2013 Sale Of Hungarian TV2
The opposition Együtt party’s leader, Viktor Szigetvári, said he is refiling a report to the police concerning the 2013 sale of Hungary’s second largest commercial channel, TV2, by ProSiebenSat.1 to the channel’s managing director, Zsolt Simon, and its finance manager, Yvonne Dederick. According to Együtt’s report first submitted in January 2014—rejected by police at the time - the legal transaction presented to the public did not reflect the true state of affairs.

Együtt argued that there is a possibility that an unidentified perpetrator kept the parties involved ill-informed in order to benefit financially. Based on information that has recently become available, a company linked to Károly Fonyó, an associate of businessman Lajos Simicska’s, was behind the transaction, and this information has now been added to the report submitted to the police.

Simon and Dederick were, in effect, proxies for Fonyó, he added. Last week, a legal dispute emerged over the ownership of TV2. On 15 October, Magyar Broadcasting Co signed a contract with TV2 Media Group Holdings and CEE Broadcasting Holding to purchase a 100% stake in their businesses. TV2’s portfolio includes the television channels TV2, Super TV2, FEM3 and PRO4.

The company had revenue of 17.6 billion forints (EUR 57m) last year. Magyar Broadcasting is owned by Andrew Vajna, a Hollywood producer and businessman who is also the government’s film industry commissioner. It then emerged that Megapolis Media, owned by Fonyó, had paid 1 million euros for pre-emption rights in autumn 2014.

Citing business confidentiality, Fonyó neither confirmed nor denied the related press reports.

Simicska controls various media interests including the daily Magyar Nemzet and HírTV. Szigetvári said Együtt’s legal action does not directly relate to the current legal dispute on the sale of TV2.
