Hungarian State Audit Office Refuses Audits “On Party Demand”
The State Audit Office will not carry out audits “on demand” by political parties or any other organisations, the office said in response to opposition party PM’s call for an audit in connection with Hungary’s pavilion at the Milan World Expo. The office said in a statement that audits are carried out exclusively in line with a predefined schedule or on instruction by parliament or the government.

Reports and proposals by other organisations can be taken into consideration but audits cannot be launched on demands by political and other organisations, the statement said.

The State Audit Office is not an investigative authority or court and cannot carry out extraordinary audits, it added.

PM spokesman Richárd Barabás said earlier that a report by online news portal Index had served proof that contracts connected to the Hungarian pavilion in Milan were cover-up for financing businesses close to the ruling Fidesz party.
