Foreign Authors Produce 29% Of Published Works In Hungary

About 29% of works published in Hungary are by foreign authors, a fresh summary of data compiled by the Central Statistical Office shows. American authors accounted for about half of the works published by foreign writers, and UK and German authors for about a quarter, the data from 2013- 2014 show. Foreign authors’ share of published works was the biggest in fiction, reaching almost 44%, and came to 21% in the children’s and young adult segment and 17% in non-fiction, according to 2014 data.
The number of publications in Hungary reached 12,747 last year. Some 29 million copies of the works were published. Books accounted for 91% of the total.
Other works, such as sheet music, maps and booklets made up the rest. Book sales in Hungary reached 59.5 billion forints (EUR 192m) in 2014.
Textbooks accounted for 27% of the total spent, non-fiction for 23%, literature for 23%, children’s and young adult books for 18% and reference and professional works for 9%.
About 60% of Hungarians read a book last year, eight percentage points under the European Union average.
