Hungary's President Áder Wins Libel Suit Against Index
- 9 Dec 2015 8:00 AM
The Capital Court of Appeals has upheld President János Áder’s claim against news website Index over its report that he left his post during his compulsory army service in the 1970s and fired his gun while drunk. The appeals court raised the fine payable by the author of the report, András B. Vágvölgyi, from Ft 50,000 imposed by a lower court to Ft 600,000. Judge Marianne Oszkó Kizman stressed that the ruling is not meant as a restriction on press freedom.
Index will challenge the ruling at the Kúria and if necessary the European Court of Human Rights. Vágvölgyi will also turn to the Kúria.
