Hungarian Armed Forces Planned To Be Deployable In Case Of Terrorist Threat
The defence minister will put forward a proposal next week on allowing the mobilisation and, if need be, the deployment of the armed forces inside the country in case of a terrorist threat, daily Magyar Idők said. István Simicskó will present the proposal for discussion by the five parliamentary parties next Tuesday. To effect the proposed changes, the country’s constitution will have to be amended.

The related motion requires a two-thirds support by deputies to clear parliament, including votes by opposition MPs. The paper did not report officials as suggesting that the country was under any direct threat of terrorism.

The fundamental law currently mandates the mobilisation and deployment of the armed forces in the instances of a state of danger, unexpected attack, state of preventive defence, state of national crisis and state of emergency.

Under the motion, a terrorist threat would become another instance for such measures.

The five-party consultation will also aim to clarify legal powers delegated to the government in case of declaring a state of terrorist threat. Simicskó will also outline structural reforms planned at the Hungarian armed forces.
