'Gallant Frenchmen', Mupa, 2 March
- 29 Feb 2016 4:10 AM
After two successful tragédies en musique, Jean-Philippe Rameau, the reformer of French grand opera, introduced an opéra-ballet entitled Les Indes galantes (The Amorous Indies). His interest had been piqued by the chief of an American Indian tribe and his five companions, who had presented their own dances at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris.
The similarly gallant style of the pieces by Jean-Marie Leclair, a celebrated violin virtuoso from the first half of the 18th century, also reveals a thorough study of dance on the part of the composer.
François-Joseph Gossec, one of the leading figures of 18th century French music, had even Rameau enthralled with his symphonies, while Haydn composed six symphonies for his 1785 concert tour of Paris, dedicating the fourth to French queen Marie Antoinette.
