Running Generates HUF 2.7 Bln In Budapest
Marathon tourism in the Hungarian capital generated direct spending of HUF 2.7 billion and tax revenue of HUF 880 million in 2015, Hungary’s National Economy Minister Mihály Varga said on Monday when presenting the latest study by consultancy KPMG commissioned by the Budapest Sport Office, according to reports.

Findings of the study show that Telekom Vivicitta, the Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon and the SPAR Budapest Marathon Festival, the capitalʼs three big marathons, drew more than 70,000 registered competitors over 2015, some 22% more than a year earlier.

KPMG added that approximately 17,500 foreign competitors arriving in Hungary for the races spent about 65,000 guest nights in Budapest. Domestic competitors arriving from outside the capital made up approximately 60-70% of all Hungarian runners, and they also spent several nights at commercial accommodations, KPMG added.

The study by KPMG shows that some 70% of those who visit the capital for the aforementioned races are planning to return to Hungary.
